’tis the Season for Giving…

HAVING FUN AND HAVING A HEART is what our book club is all about…

Friends and fans know that I quite often talk about my book club, so it’s only natural I share our most recent celebration with you. Once a year we have a Book Club Christmas Party. December is the only month of the year when we don’t read a book but come togeher to celebrate our friendship and do something good for others.

Soup-001In the early days of our club, the annual party included a gift exchange. It was fun, we all had a lot of laughs, and we each went home with something that would forever reside on the top shelf or back corner of an already overcrowded closet. Okay, I’ll admit it – buying and giving presents is fun. .. but we, as a group, decided that rather than buy presents for one another, we would buy prsents for needy children. Since a few of our members were working wih the Guardian Ad Litem program, it was easy to identify the children and zero in on their specific needs. We each bought one of the gifts on a child’s Santa list, wrapped it and arrived at the book club party with gift in hand. Our Guardian Gals then delivered the gifts in time for Santa’s arrival.

This year we say an even more powerful need. We live just a few short miles from Fort Pierce, a town that has been hard hit by theOkeechobee-Magazine-page-001 slugish economy and lack of emplyment. In many cases, families have had to depend on the Food Pantries and Outreach programs to provide food for their children. The Treasure Coast Food Bank alone serves 107,000 food insecure people every week. Of these, 55% are children and 18% are senior citizens.

In lieu of buying gifts, we set up a basket and members annonmously contributed whatever they could afford.  When the day was done, our group had collected a total of $400.  We have decided to split those funds and send $200 to the Harvest Food and Outreach Program and $200 to the Treasure Coast Food Bank.
