Dewey’s 24 Hour ReadaThon and The Twelfth Child Giveaway

April 25, 2014 #fanfun, Giveaway, News & Events 67

Dewey's 24 Hour ReadathonThe history of this read-a-thon is as touching as any story, maybe more so because it involves book bloggers. Since this is my first year to participate I want to share their story here –

In October 2007, Dewey from The Hidden Side of a Leaf (her blog has since been taken down, so this link won’t work) started the 24 Hour Read-a-Thon, an event that was inspired by 24 Hour Comics Day. In her words, here’s how the read-a-thon got started (posted on August 30, 2007):

My husband and son go to 24 Hour Comics Day, an annual event held in October. My role has always been to drive them there and pick them up the next morning, so that my husband doesn’t have to drive half an hour after being up all night working on his comic.

When I participated in MotherReader’s 48 Hour Book Challenge this past spring (and even won a prize!), I was reminded of the 24 Hour Comics Day. That weekend, I decided that this October 20th (a Saturday), while my husband and son are off making comics, I would hold a 24 Hour Readathon. Ideally, if it goes well, I’d like to make it an annual thing.

When Dewey first started the read-a-thon in October 2007, 37 people participated. When she again hosted the read-a-thon in June 2008, 69 people participated. At Dewey’s last read-a-thon in October 2008, there were 119 people participating. As someone who helped Dewey with the organization and execution of the read-a-thon, I can tell you that she was blown away by the response to her idea.

The read-a-thon, in about one year’s time, became such a cornerstone of the book blogging community that the event was nominated for best event/carnival/meme for BBAW. It didn’t win, but Dewey really appreciated the nomination.

After Dewey passed away in November 2008, the three of us who had helped Dewey with the past two read-a-thons, Hannah(WordLily), Ana (Nymeth), and Trish (Hey Lady!) knew we wanted to continue the tradition. We certainly don’t expect to live up to the high standard that Dewey set for us, but we can certainly try.

Be sure to click on the picture above and sign up to participate in this readathon! This touching tribute to their friend underscores how happy I am to participate in this year’s Read-a-thon with a mini-challenge to win books to read!

Please comment and answer this question – How long have you spent reading at any one sitting? – and I’ll email you an eBook copy of The Twelfth Child Book ONE of the Serendipity Series.

Book TWO of the series, Previously Loved Treasures, will have a launch party April 28 & 29. CLICK HERE to join the event and invite your friends on Facebook, so everyone can stop by for fun and prizes!

That’s a great question! I think the longest I’ve ever just sat and read, without substantial breaks, would be 4-5 hours.

  2. rnm.owl@gmail.com'

    Rachel Noel

The longest I spent was probably 8 hours in one book. It was a very dense Philosophy Book and I needed to read it for my class. It was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done. I kept having to change positions and even laid on the dorm floor for a while.

That’s an awesome question. I’m not really sure about the answer though. I have stayed an entire night just reading more than once.

I remember reading non-stop, I mean, without even going to the toilet or to the kitchen for water, etc. for 3 hours, from 10 pm to 1 am one evening after dinner, because I HAD to finish “House rules”, by Jodi Picoult. It was the first book I read by her and I was abslutely hooked on it, so my boyfriend went to bed and I stayed in the sitting room reading non-stop.
Fortunately, I think it was a Friday, so it didn’t cause more damage at the next morning 🙂

  5. dolphinsrockandismell@hotmail.co.uk'

    Katie B

That’s a hard one, but I’d probably say about 4-6 hours in one go, and I finished the book.

    Does one “lying down” count?

When I was a teenager, I’d get terrible, terrible colds, which confined me to the bed for days. I’d spend that time mostly reading non-stop (12 hours + straight).

These days, 6-7 hours is what I tend to do when I am super into something.

  7. theweakstandtall@gmail.com'

    Mackenzie

That’s a hard question. I think the most time I ever spent reading in one sitting was on a plane to China, where I read for about 7 hours straight.

  8. lenntoftelin@gmail.com'

    Elin

I’ve spent an entire day reading, I read during meals as well. It was Harry Potter, oviously 😉

  9. teriboop@yahoo.com'

    Teri Beckelheimer

I don’t know exactly, but about 8-10 hours. My husband goes out of town for business some, and I have done marathon days of reading stopping only momentarily for bathroom breaks and to heat up meals.

  10. jazmin-jade@hotmail.com'

    Jazmin Jade

Oh my gosh I have never timed myself before… Golly. What would it be? I think it would have to be anywhere between 8-14 hours straight.

  11. kanoko.han@gmail.com'

    Kanoko

I wouldn’t know. I’d have been too busy reading to notice! 😀 (It should be about 10 hours or so, with a bathroom break or two. Happened several times when I was younger with dense books. This is why I try not to read before bedtime if I can help it now that I’m gainfully employed. Haha.)

  12. sam_smith73@hotmail.com'

Good question! On Monday I bought a book – geek girl and sat and read the whole thing in one sitting. This must have been about 5 hours

  13. xsellenax@net.hr'

    Iluzija

I’ll guess 7, although I did spend more than one sunday, getting out of my bed only to visit the toilet and the kitchen. I’m guessing 7 because I don’t think I can stay awake longer than that without wanting to eat something 😀

Good luck to all the readers!!

  14. klorenz2118@gmail.com'

    Criosti

The longest I read in a single sitting…Probably around 6 hours. Pretty sure my husband thought I was mad at him and ignoring him – I wasn’t, but when I read everything fades to the background.

  15. cbrign8@tigers.lsu.weu'

    Carrington B

What a great question. The longest I’ve ever read is about 2 hours. Then I till a five minute break and kept read for another two hours. I ended up reading all of divergent in ine day ;);)

  16. pseratte@roadrunner.com'

    Patti @ Reading Distractions

The longest I have spent reading without a break is about two hours. I’ve accomplished about 12 – 14 hours of reading at previous Dewey read-a-thons, but have taken breaks for challenges and blogging, etc.

  17. kirsten@femmeflavor.com'

    Kirsten

Good question! I think the longest I’ve truly non-stop read was the 8 hours it took me to read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix the first time, on the day it came out. I was so cranky that I had to work that day, and couldn’t get to the book until nearly 10p! Thanks for hosting 🙂

  18. tim.guillan@gmail.com'

    Tim

I think I have a very short attention span, so I rarely read for long hours. Probably 4 hours during a flight from Istanbul to London. I didn’t eat, didn’t sleep but only read.
When it comes to audiobooks, I finished an 11 hour audiobook in one sitting.

  19. queenbeechelle@hotmail.com'

    Rachelle

hmmmm…..The longest I’ve read in one sitting has been about 8 hours. I used to sit with my Grandma, a book lover and night owl who passed on to me those genes along with her auburn hair and crooked toe on her right foot. She would let me stay up as long as I wanted to read, and we usually would start shortly after dinner, which was usually around 6pm. We wouldn’t go to bed until around 3am. That time with my Grandma is one of my favorite childhood memories.

  20. kayminier@hotmail.com'

    Karine:)

I remember reading for 8 hours straight while I was in college. I was reading a Jean Auel novel and even forgot to eat!

But I also remember entire nights spent reading. And terrible mornings!

  21. sarahshomemaking@hotmail.com'

    Sarah Caitlynn

Not 100% sure but im almost always reading I just take breaks. I almost always read after dinner around 7pm to bed around 11pm. So probably 4-5 hrs + bathroom breaks.

  22. thebrightspark@gmail.com'

    Nikki

Hmmm, that’s a tough one. I’ve taken part in previous readathons, so if we’re not counting quick breaks to grab drinks and update my post, probably about six hours. I tend to take longer breaks every six hours or so to stretch my legs and keep my brain awake!

  23. anastasiaL_93@mail.ru'

    Nastya

The longest time I’ve ever spend reading is about 4 – 4.5 hours with only one minute break to stretch my legs or ask my father to bring me more tea (or chocolate)

  24. world4anna@gmail.com'

    Anna

I think it’s 5 or 6. I don’t know because when I’m reading a really good book, I go to the bathroom grab a snack and sit right back down. I don’t care about the time. I can finish a 400 hundred page book in one sitting if I really like it.

  25. meisje_roos@hotmail.com'

    Rose

I’m not entirely sure but I’m guessing about 10 hours without any substantial breaks. It was that one time/night where I just HAD to finish the Hunger Games series…

  26. jennifer.rijo@gmail.com'

    Jennifer Rijo

I think the longest has been about 9 hours with no breaks, my grandma came in every few hours to tell me to rest my eyes until she saw that telling me did nothing and she took the book away xd

  27. dnaplremediation@gmail.com'

    Elisa @ Leopards and Dragons

Hard question – when I was a child I would get strep throat and spent days in bed. I read for hours and hours then. I think I read for almost two days straight getting ready for my orals when I was getting my PhD but that one was not for fun – I was reading and synthesizing journal articles. I was brutal.

  28. pardontheinterruption78@gmail.com'

    Laura

    Hi Bette!

The longest I’ve read for one sitting is 6 hours! I stayed up to finish “The Lord of the Rings”, and boy, was it worth the exhaustion the next day!

    Great question!

  29. fortovat@seznam.cz'

    Tamara Fořtová

Well, the longest time I would sit down and read without a break would be probably up to five hours, if I truly get myself lost in the book and read at nigt 😀

  30. creating-serenity@live.com'

    Christina T @ Creating-Serenity

    Thank you for the giveaway!

I want to say I have sat probably for four hours at one time without moving. I’ve done the Dewey read a thon before so if we’re to count the entire time I went 17 hours reading with little breaks like the one I’m currently on!

  31. journeythroughbooks@gmail.com'

    Sheila (Book Journey)

7 hours – Happy Potter book 7… start to finish no stopping. 🙂 And one time a classic for book club that I procrastinated on starting… 5 hours 😉

I vividly remember reading all of Allegiant on New Year’s Eve 2013, which took about 7 hours. And then my heart was broken before the ball dropped 🙁

  33. mgifford01@snet.net'

    Martha G

I think it was 5 hours on a non-stop flight from Frankfort to San Francisco. One novel, several magazines, and a kid’s book.

  34. dtanton@gmail.com'

    Denise

Oh, without any break at all — 5 hours, last year right before I called it a night. I was trying to push through and knew if I got up, I’d be so tired that I’d quit. 😉

  35. hncourtright@gmail.com'

    indiereadergirl0329

That’s a great question! I can usually read for 4-5 straight. I think the longest, though, has been either 7 or 8 hours. If you count listening to audio books, it is definitely 6 or 7. I think actually reading is 7+ though. I know I have read books in a single sitting. Which I plan to do today, too.

  36. samjaymc@gmail.com'

Sam @ The Little Munchkin Reader

This is such a great discussion question! I once spent eight hours reading non-stop when the final Harry Potter book was released. Plus, this was the day I’d returned from Australia.

  37. mrs.soule@gmail.com'

    Mrs.Soule

With breaks, the first time I did the Dewey Readathon last April – I made it all 24 hours that time! Without breaks, I think about 4 hours reading Nalini Singh’s Heart of Obsidian.

  38. nahree@gmail.com'

    Etudesque

I once read 8 hours in one sitting to read the Harry Potter book my dad bought me at the midnight release 🙂 Good memories, thanks for the questions!

  39. pinkindle@hotmail.com'

    Angie F.

I can’t remember the exact number of hours but I did read all of Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi in one sitting. I seriously did not move all day. 😛

  40. zombiemom621@gmail.com'

    Jenna

I believe the longest I have ever read in one sitting was probably 5 hours when I was reading the Harry Potter books.

  41. history_buff@hotmail.com'

    Melissa W.

Probably about 3 hours was the longest I spent reading in one spot. Always seem to be getting up every so often to do other things.

  42. maria.mayor.19@hotmail.com'

    Maria

I’m pretty sure it’s around 5 hours. I don’t think more than that would be possible for me, nature calls often if you know what I mean.

  43. amanda91@online.no'

    Amanda

I really need a few minutes to breathe and do something else, so it’s probably only about 3 hours. I’ve read a lot in one day, but not in one sitting.

  44. kathrynlouw@gmail.com'

    Kate @ Kate's Book Nook

When the final Harry Potter book came out, I spent about 12 hours reading it in bed. I didn’t actually manage to finish it in that one sitting (I am a horribly slow reader and I was with my sisters and a couple friends who were also reading it and so we kept stopping and talking about what was happening).

  45. belle.books117@gmail.com'

    Belle Books

I have probably read for 15 hours in one sitting. And if you were wondering I read three books.

  46. austendumas@gmail.com'

    Megan Folse

I haven’t ever counted, but numerous times I’ve read from the moment I’ve woken up until it was time for bed. Especially in summer. Reading from 8 in the morning until 8 at night is no problem for me.

  47. Bette Lee Crosby

Thanks for the great response! I’ve answered the emails and look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at the launch party!

  48. hernandez_brianne@yahoo.com'

    Brianne Hernandez

Hmm… I don’t think I’ve ever counted how long I’ve read before, but I know I used to read from literally the moment I woke up to when I had to go to sleep, especially if I was on a break from school. I’d say about 10-12 hours is the longest time I’ve read without stopping.

  49. samantha.nicola@gmail.com'

    Samantha (@CyV)

I’ve spent entire days reading! Unfortunately not so much the case anymore, but I’m up for it. Shame the whole “adulting” thing came along to be a party pooper!

  50. leebroom4@gmail.com'

    Lee Broom

I haven’t done a reading marathon before…24 hours that is. I’ve read almost all day while the kids were in school when I’ve been enjoying whatever book or series of books I’m on. I can read for a long while with no problem. Just break every hour or so for water or snack or bathroom:)

  51. Bette Lee Crosby

Thanks again to everyone who stopped by and chatted! I have tried to send out The Twelfth Child to you so if you haven’t received it yet, feel free to contact me at betteleecrosby @gmail.com
