I am super-delighted to have Dana  Taylor as my guest today – I say super delighted because I love her stories and her latest book HOPE FOR THE HOLIDAYS is my all-time favorite. In this post Dana is sharing the story behind the story…so let yourself believe and just enjoy!

holidaymedDo you believe in angels? Hope for the Holidays features three short stories with a touch of the angelic. The first story, Shiny Green Shoes, takes place in 1935 on Old Route 66 in Luther, Oklahoma. It features a young black child, Mazie McDonald, and an aging white actress, Peach Knight. Where did I get the inspiration for the story?

It began when I received a Reiki energy treatment. I am now a Reiki Master and therapist myself, but I began as a client.  Many images can pass through your mind during a treatment. On one particular day, I seemed to get “in touch” with a jovial black jazz singer. Of course, being a writer, I have a vivid imagination, but when I was searching for a “fresh” idea for a Christmas story, the black songstress seemed to send me the idea. I began to see shoes. This paragraph from the prologue captures the “voice” and images that came to mind:

My gaze travels across the room to the row of shoes, each one placed under the matchingshoes300 costume, a final accessory to set off the gown and flash under a shapely long leg. The younger Mazie is agog with wonder and delight. So many pretty shoes, dazzling rainbow colors made just for a Mazie foot.

The shiny green shoes represent dreams. Little Mazie and old Peach Knight forge an unlikely friendship and fight would-be dream stealers. Ultimately, they bring hope to a town down on its luck. The writing experience of Shiny Green Shoes felt like collaboration with a black jazz singing muse. It became one of the most enjoyable writing experiences of my life.

Hopefully, readers also find it a delightful story.
