May was a busy reading month for me. We took a driving trip to New York so I was away from my computer and had time to lose myself in several wonderful stories. Here are two very different books and I loved both of them…
SWEET LAKE by Christine Nolfi
I enjoyed this book thoroughly. Perhaps it was because I saw a bit of myself in Linnie Wayfair… she is a young woman with a heavy load of responsibility and a ne’er-do-well brother. As Linnie works to restore the family inn and make it profitable her brother shows up out of nowhere and threatens to ruin everything. Not only will you come to love Linnie and her friends, but you will want to join the Sweet Lake Sirens, a group of middle-aged women who meet at the lake in the moonlight and… wait, I am not going to say anything more because I don’t want to spoil the story. I will say the kinship of the Sirens is likely to remind you of the wonderful Ya Ya Sisterhood. So put Sweet Lake on your Summer Reading List, I think you’ll enjoy this fun story and there is plenty of tension to keep you turning the pages.
I already have “The Comfort of Secrets” Book 2 in this series on my TBR list.
THE PAPER MAGICIAN by Charlie N. Holmberg
While this series is flat out fantasy, the characters are so well drawn you will find yourself believing in their world. When Ceony Twill graduates from the Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined, she has her heart set on studying with a metal magician, but she is instead assigned to a paper magician, which means that she will forever be restricted to the magical arts of paper. At the time it seems overwhelmingly disappointing, but as she soon comes to learn sometimes paper can be the difference in life and death. This is a delightful read that will have you turning the pages until the very end. I loved Ceony and will be continuing on with the next book in the series – The Glass Magician
