Literacy Council of Indian River CountyONE PAGE, ONE BOOK, ONE LIFE AT A TIME, this is the tag line used by the Literacy Council of Indian River County.

And that line speaks the truth. I recently received a letter thanking me for a donation. The words of that letter were so inspiring, that I wanted to share the story with you.  Following is an excerpt…

You changed lives! One student recently went to a restaurant she had never visited. At her next tutoring session she excitedly told her tutor that she could read the menu and order from the menu. This was the first time she had been able to place an order by herself without any assistance.

Sounds like a little thing, doesn't it? But have you ever been in a foreign land and looked at a menu where you couldn't read a word of what was written? I have, and it's a humbling experience. I can only imagine what it is like to face that same situation in your own country.

Literacy is such an important cause and I am so proud to be a supporter of this awesome chapter. We all too often focus on teaching children to read, but if the adult in their household cannot read, chances are the child will struggle with learning. Please join me in helping to expand the learning experience for adults. Volunteer at your library or local Literacy Services Chapter. They need more than money, they need readers who will willingly help another adult learn to read.

The Literacy Council of Indian River County's mission is to focus attention on literacy, provide instruction to individuals with limited literacy skills, and empower students to achieve their goals so they may become contributing members of the community.
