While walking home from work one evening, Jeff Manning is struck by a car and killed. Two women fall to pieces at the news: his wife, Claire, and his co-worker Tish. Reeling from her loss, Claire must comfort her grieving son as well as contend with funeral arrangements, well-meaning family members, and the arrival of Jeff’s estranged brother, who was her ex-boyfriend. Tish volunteers to attend the funeral on her company’s behalf, but only she knows the true risk of inserting herself into the wreckage of Jeff’s life.

Told through the three voices of Jeff, Tish, and Claire, Hidden explores the complexity of relationships, the repercussions of our personal choices, and the responsibilities we have to the ones we love.

Hidden by Catherine McKenzie on Bette’s Bookshelf

This is definitely a novel that will keep you turning pages. The story is told is first person, but three different people – Jeff, who was killed on the way home from work, Claire, his wife and Tish, a co-worker who may or may not be also his lover. I loved the writing style as the author opens each chapter without actually telling you who is speaking – you, the reader, have to figure that out. And, after a chapter or two you will have no trouble doing so. It is a fast-paced book with some surprising twists and turns that leaves the character, and perhaps you also, wondering just how much you really want to know about your spouse.

Wildflower Heart by Grace Greene on Bette’s Bookshelf

From the bestselling author of The Memory of Butterflies comes the first in a bittersweet series about love and loss.

Kara Hart was scarred by loss—first the loss of her mother and now her husband. She feels broken, with no will to move forward, until her father does the unexpected: he moves to the Virginia countryside to restore an old Victorian mansion. Kara decides to go with him, telling herself that it will only be temporary.

The huge house is neglected and derelict, but Kara discovers its breathtaking field of wildflowers and is stunned by their beauty. The house, the grounds, and the quirky neighbors—including a handsome one—are almost as fascinating as her father’s sudden willingness to discuss her mother and his own secret past.

Kara is finding her new normal when tragedy strikes again, forcing her to make difficult choices. Will she go back to her old life and risk losing all she has gained? Or will she face her fears and give herself the opportunity to grow?

Wildflower Heart by Grace Greene on Bette’s Bookshelf

Wildflower Heart is a heartfelt story that is impossible to resist. In this poignant tale of overcoming loss, Greene magically captures the elusive essence of wildflowers and weaves it into both her characters and setting. Highly recommended.

The Zookeeper’s Wife by Diane Ackerman on Bette’s Bookshelf

A true story in which the keepers of the Warsaw Zoo saved hundreds of people from Nazi hands.

After their zoo was bombed, Polish zookeepers Jan and Antonina Zabinski managed to save over three hundred people from the Nazis by hiding refugees in the empty animal cages. With animal names for these “guests,” and human names for the animals, it’s no wonder that the zoo’s code name became “The House Under a Crazy Star.” Best-selling naturalist and acclaimed storyteller Diane Ackerman combines extensive research and an exuberant writing style to re-create this fascinating, true-life story—sharing Antonina’s life as “the zookeeper’s wife,” while examining the disturbing obsessions at the core of Nazism. Winner of the 2008 Orion Award.

The Zookeeper’s Wife by Diane Ackerman on Bette’s Bookshelf

This a true story in which the keepers of the Warsaw Zoo saved hundreds of people from the Nazi concentration camps. The author’s detailed descriptions are deep and often disturbing, but in spite of, or perhaps because of, the long and weighty details, I found this to be a very tedious read. Just keeping track of the myriad listing of Polish places, people, streets, foods, etc. took much of the joy out of reading this book. The underlying story is very meritorious, but sadly not worth the time and effort it took to read it. That of course, is just my opinion.

The Secret Life of Mrs. London by Rebecca Rosenberg on Bette’s Bookshelf

San Francisco, 1915. As America teeters on the brink of world war, Charmian and her husband, famed novelist Jack London, wrestle with genius and desire, politics and marital competitiveness. Charmian longs to be viewed as an equal partner who put her own career on hold to support her husband, but Jack doesn’t see it that way…until Charmian is pulled from the audience during a magic show by escape artist Harry Houdini, a man enmeshed in his own complicated marriage. Suddenly, charmed by the attention Houdini pays her and entranced by his sexual magnetism, Charmian’s eyes open to a world of possibilities that could be her escape.

As Charmian grapples with her urge to explore the forbidden, Jack’s increasingly reckless behavior threatens her dedication. Now torn between two of history’s most mysterious and charismatic figures, she must find the courage to forge her own path, even as she fears the loss of everything she holds dear.

The Secret Life of Mrs. London by Rebecca Rosenberg on Bette’s Bookshelf

This novel is a great read for history buffs, especially if you enjoy stories set in early 20th Century America. The author describes her characters as complex and complicated and indeed they are. Charmaine London is the wife of famous writer Jack London. This story is hers, it delves into the challenges of her relationship with Jack, who is unpredictable and an alcoholic, and her love affair with the Great Houdini. It is interesting to see her grow into an awareness of who she really is. The thing I enjoyed most was that the story dances on a fine wire between fact and fiction, but as you read, you believe every word.
